Description
Angelica responds to long, bright days by producing an abundance of secondary metabolites such as terpenes, also known as resins, known for their role in the plant’s defense system. This characteristic becomes more pronounced during the northern summer, as the plants do not grow beyond their natural size despite the abundance of light.
The excess energy from the sun is converted by the plant into compounds such as phellandrenes with citrus, pepper and mint tones.
The powerful name given by Lönnrot and referencing Kalevala’s Väinämöinen has its reasons, as angelica has been used to fight against scurvy, plague, and the Spanish flu due to its supportive effects on the intestines and liver function. Even ancient peoples utilized its roots by chewing them after long winters. Angelica also soothes throat roughness, and its seeds can be enjoyed as is, serving as domestic and organic throat lozenges.
The elixir can be enjoyed by itself but also serves as a fine addition to drinks, porridge, and yogurts.
